Windy Valley Muskox Yarn and my project Lace Knitting
I have my whole life have purchased many books knitting and knitting on the road. My latest buy is Arctic Lace by Donna Druchunas. This is a wonderful book step by step introduction to knitting and designing lace. Of particular interest is the use of Muskox yarn. So, after buying some of Windy Valley Muskox Yarn I learn how to use this wondrous fiber to create a lace shawl.
Reading this book – and Donna’s blog – is a glimpse into a world of top decision makers in Alaska – a place few of us ever dare. Learn about the Yup? Ik and Inupiat people, their villages and Muskox. I have learned how town and every village has its own peak patterns in the clothing and the Oomingmak Co-op that helps to promote traditional lace with Muskox yarn.
For those of you who are familiar with the Muskox, it is an animal in the Arctic Circle. The fiber, which is called from the animal Qiviut. Gathered is the right word because the wool is not from the Muskox sheered, like the wool of sheep, but brushed off Qiviut the animal when it naturally raises his coat. can Qiviut is one of the warmest, softest and lightest of the fibers are working with, it’s the fluffy-soft underside wool from the musk ox – Oomingmak – umimmak in Greenland. Because of their rarity and the way the wool is harvested, Qiviut is very expensive.
I’m from Windy Valley Muskox Qiviut my yarn. It was a 100% pure Qiviut yarn, the color is called Alaska Spruce. It’s a one ounces top weight and you get over 218 yards per ball. I choose Qiviut pure, but you can also Qiviut / merino / silk and Qiviut / silk blends in gorgeous colors from Windy Valley Muskox yarn. If you have never used Qiviut before you should be aware that it lacks the elasticity of wool, so that it drapes beautifully for shawls and scarves is not ideal for sweaters and the like. And it does not have the glossy look of merino wool. The Qiviut / wool blends you get a yarn that holds its shape, feels incredibly soft and has a luxurious look to. Also Qiviut flower after it is washed, you get resembles a fuzzy halo, mohair, but is much softer.
The Arctic Lace book is a great teaching aid – even if you Qiviut never done lace work before or have no intention to use. Apart from teaching the reader about the Muskox, the people who work the fiber Oomingmak Co-op, you can also view a list of projects. For my project I chose the ‘Arctic Diamond Stole’. I have 8 reps, and after it turned out to block it quite large, but light as a feather. It hangs around my shoulders a treat with a softness felt, believed to be. Someone said I know my Qiviut shawl feels like putting your hands in a cloud. I think this is the best way to describe how it feels.
I have really enjoyed reading the Arctic Lace book and working conditions with Qiviut yarn. I know the book but now that I have to start again soon in another project – the top gloves – and I already know which yarn I am using from Windy Valley Muskox Yarn, the Qiviut Royal Blend – 50/50 blend Qiviut silk and mulberry handspun in Peru – pure pleasure, but only once live.
